SUPINE STUDIOS PRESENTS

|

SUPIII.jpgSupine Studios is our home. We are a small collective of Artists, Designers and Musicians living in a house in Hackney, North East London. In our intimate surroundings of clutter and garbage we have an art studio and a music studio in which we do wonderful things......................If you would like to hire the Music Studio space either for practice or for recording, just send us a message. Artists who have used the studio include our own Cibelle (herself) and Simon (of Triggerbox and Foreign Beggars), and from elseware: Dev from Lightspeed Champion, Triggerbox, Barbarossa, Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit, Josh Weller, the Bleeding Heart Narrative and Emmy the Great................Johnny's music video for 'Little Donkey' by Florrible and Misrabella (a collaboration between Florence and the Machine and Laydee Isa) is available to watch!

A HUMAN

A.HUMAN formed in a stream lined, brass tapped, no spirit pub shop in Clerkenwell London. Their meeting was forced through employment, serving lamb cordial to suited no-brains who cared more for the wage than they did for their souls. Tired of the prospect of serving these people forever they wrote music in a lounge with a window, watched life insurance adverts whilst passing Roll-ups. In their own world they continued to create, with time interest came from the world that trades in music, and on a pier, on a Golden Mile they signed away their eyes.

THE OUTSIDE ROYALTY

The Outside Royalty are a 6 piece indie electro chamber rock band formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The band moved across the water to England in the summer of 2006, and has ever since been attracting attention in all the right places. On May 12th 2008, they release debut single 'Falling' as 7" on Bloody Awful Poetry records, produced by Phil Vinall (Radiohead , Pulp, Placebo, Elastica). Aside from the single release party on 28th April at Madame Jo Jo's, a series of other live shows and in-store performances across the UK and London will celebrate the release. So then, the story so far: cutting their teeth in the few live music venues that Pittsburgh had to offer, an article ran in a local music magazine 'The Front', which talked of the Pittsburgh music scene's demise, and cried out to any talented bands: 'get out now! Move to New York, move to LA!' The piece led with a picture of The Outside Royalty. Luckily for the UK public, they chose none of the above, arriving recently in London with 4 original members remaining. Tony Visconti, who was corresponding with Adam at the time, warned of the perils of London living - saying they'd need a "bucket full of money and a barrel full of work visas" to make it work. Having neither, they set off regardless - following little more than a "gut feeling". After picking up a new bassist and cellist, and despite all living under each other's feet in a drafty and squalid Victorian terrace (just off the Archway Road), they remain intact and making highly revered music. They've toured with Young Knives, played with Babyshambles, The Duke Spirit, The Holloways, Juliette & the Licks, Spinto Band, The Shins, Good Shoes, been championed by Colin Murray with repeated spins on Radio 1, Gideon Coe, Tom Robinson and Steve Lamacq on 6music, and had 2 'sell out' Club NME shows at Koko. Along with this, guest musician Rick Nelson from Polyphonic Spree has featured live with the band on numerous occasions. With such a storming live show to boot, it's finally time for the The Outside Royalty to be invited in. The Outside Royalty are: Adam Billing (Vox/Guitars), Echo Wu (Violin), Frederique Legrand (Cello), Paul Crawford-Smith (Bass), Eizan Miyamoto (Synths), Brandon Paluzzi (Drums).

GYPSY HOTEL PROUDLY PRESENTS

FRANK.jpgGYPSY HOTEL PROUDLY PRESENTS:

FRANK SANAZI AND THE IRAQ PACK BAND

With Saddami Davis Jnr + Nancy Sanazi
Frank Sanazi, The Ubermeister of Lounge brings a NEW ORDER and discipline to the usually more relaxed swing style. He has embraced the modern idiom by singing about and reflecting on the world around him. As his music and style originate from his homeland he has preferred to call the whole movement 'Fatherlounge'.The Iraq Pack have in the past appeared in front of millions in their own right but now are happy to keep their heads down in the intimate surroundings of Bardens Boudoir, Frank says he always new he'd make it to Holyrood and it is a culmination of one of his greatest dreams...as well as another tour of Europe.
Frank has been accused of racism, an accusation he strongly rebuffs by pointing out that he is on tour with two gentleman from the middle east and another who is both black and Jewish.
Frank is at pains to point out that he is a great family man and is proud of his daughter Nancy's success, especially with her smash hit 'Jack Boots are Made for Walking', and she looks certain to follow in her father's goose steps..Frank loves animals and children, taking a special interest in the nation's youth. He subscribes to and partakes in many charities; he particularly likes the ones with stylish uniforms... Frank longs for the world of Love, Peace and above all efficiency.Saddami by comparison prefers the tranquility of sensory deprivation. He has been known to spend many solitary months fasting without light, and although originally into the underground music scene, has recently opted for music that is dubbed 'Ultimate Swing'. Osama Bing Crosby as a performer is always on the road, it seems, popping up to gig sometimes in the most unusual places. Dean has unfortunately taken to drink and women in consolation since his house collapsed in the 90's.

THE SUGARS

Sharpening their sonic duets amongst the hard brick walls of a garage on the outskirts of the city, our three primary protagonists loaded themselves with a handful of blues inspired nastiness.Coaxed out of the confines of the garage by The Long Blondes to play their first gig in November '04, their debut in Sheffield as The Dreams Of Michigan carried just one record that was to make its way to their debut album.Fast forward 6 months, a new name and a whole rack of better songs, their second gig in a small London bar was one of more promise. Their Leeds hometown debut was a packed affair of sweaty anticipation. Leeds club-night Bad Sneakers saw the potential and offered their mutual debut recording over a handshake. Released in February 2006 on limited pink 45, 'Doo Wop/TV' was picked up by the likes of XFM's John Kennedy and soon became a live favourite. It is now their rarest release. The follow up, 'Monsters', became a viral hit, ensuring a top ten indie placing on release. Phil Jupitus named it his 'Single Of The Week', Mark Riley invited them for the first of two live sessions and most of Europe invited them on tour.Sweetened by the prospect of lengthy touring, Anna, Jodie and Matt juggled fulltime jobs with heavy touring schedules with the likes of Nine Black Alps and The Long Blondes. With their third offering came the dancefloor record they'd hoped for. Way To My Heart, produced by The Bees' 'Paul Butler', was another top ten indie smash and found its way into the heart of Richard Hawley who kindly asked them to accompany him around the country. Then disaster struck. A debilitating wrist injury meant the sad departure of youthful drummer Jodie two weeks prior to recording the album. A record deal in the bag, studio time getting put back further and further, time forced a change. Further major league supports with the likes of Seasick Steve helped them widen their audience with Long Blonde, Screech Louder, standing in on percussion duties. And then the revelation. Having known Alex from his drumming days in Leeds, the remaining duo captured him from his London base, locked him away in a freezing cold warehouse and played him endless loops from the album till he saw drum beats in his sleep.
Without time to breathe they ran to the confines of an underground studio and spent 4 weeks hammering their debut long player into the work they had long promised. Producer Will Jackson, hot off duties with The Pigeon Detectives and The Cribs, slowly became a 4th member of the band as he attempted to capture the intensity of their live shows. What escaped from the desk was a mature collection of distorted duets, cinematic ballads and bass heavy dancefloor drama. Two days fresh from the studio and it was on the road with The Von Bondies eager to hit stages up and down the country. Now with 4th single 'Black Friday' is released on 9th June followed by the awaited debut, The Curse Of The Sugars', on 23rd June they are fine tuning things to add to their exciting live show.'

THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO

|

LastDisco_Nov-1.gifThe Last Days of Disco

Live: The Oscillation (DC Recordings)

DJs: Rory Phillips (Durrr/Our Disco)
Andy Blake (Dissident)
Slutty Fringe DJs
David H (Be)

After a short but successful run over the summer, The Last Days of Disco have upped sticks and made the move up the Kingsland Road from Shoreditch to Dalston, where they are busy making themselves at home under a furniture shop at Barden's Boudoir. From Donna Summer to the DFA, Last Days takes you to a parallel universe where dirty throbbing dubbed out disco rules the roost, the streets are paved with the shit from Bianca Jagger's horse and the girl down the chip shop thinks she's Grace Jones.

The Oscillation
Born out of the ashes of The Orichalc Phase, The Oscillation is Demian Castellanos' mightiest incarnation yet, a bewildering mix of pop songs and expansive psychedelic freakouts that demands comparison with the harder edge of the 70's krautrock scene, the lambent tones of bands like Spiritualized or Loop at their most medicated, or The Ruts battling their way out of an echo chamber to a background of white noise.

Having wowed critics and punters alike with the astonishing debut set 'Out Of Phase', The Oscillation have gone on to become one of the most exciting live acts around today, adding a heady mix of brain frying psychedelia to the dark disco punk of many of their label mates.

Rory Phillips
Having spent the best part of a decade re-defining London nightlife alongside Erol Alkan at the now legendary Trash (R.I.P) and bringing mutant disco to East London with Our Disco, Rory Phillips has built a solid reputation for parties that carve their own path while packing out the dancefloor.

Continuing the tradition, Rory's raucous headline slot at Trash's successor Durrr and the joyful crate digging of SAY YES perfectly showcase his diverse and ever evolving musical style, showcasing the best in new music while constantly unearthing hidden gems from the past aided, of course, by his trademark telephone headphone.

Aside from his sets at the aforementioned nightclubs Rory has played to crowds all across Europe, Asia, The USA and South America, provided keyboard duties for Whitey and (most proudly) recorded a DJ session for the sadly missed John Peel Show.

Andy Blake (Dissident)
Andy blake runs the dissident.london label and has a huge collection of wild and exotic disco, italo, afro-cosmic, hi-nrg & acid house records that he regularly plays to packed dance floors at all kinds of different clubs and parties. So far in 2008 he has dj'ed to a rapturous reception at Cocadisco, Disco bloodbath, Fabric, Matter, Glasgow's legendary club 69, Lasermagnetic, Horse meat disco, The big chill, Bestival, Scala in Berlin for Popkomm, Bloggers Delight, The Egg and many other underground disco parties. You can always expect a wild and crazy ride thru the finest dance music of the last 30 years whenever you have the chance to hear Andy dj.

Slutty Fringe DJs
Having started over two years ago as a way to blag some free music and get into clubs without queuing, Slutty Fringe has ,despite it's success, remained a bastion of undiscovered music and slightly shabby journalism.

David H
Resident and promoter of both The Last Days of Disco and the sprawling indie/electro/disco behemoth that is Be at The Proud Gallery in Camden, David has entertained crowds the world over with his inspired disco selections.

locust3.jpgTHE LOCUST

SPECIAL GUESTS

THE LOCUST

What did you want, sonic inducer, sheep in wool coats dumpster diving for forever hidden treasure? What did you think, summer cesspool sleeper, English wasn't a language conceived for business? Allow me, please, to introduce New Erections, the third full-length from the Southern California decade-plus young endeavor, The Locust, as a post-futurist to primitive again strangled tongue-shearer just 'cause the business is lickin' pretty bad.
Circumstances prohibiting, if the Locust could've soundtracked the previous two World War's they probably would've. Time ain't always on our side. Fortunate for ears and unfortunate for Earth, this procession leader of an album is a hell of a charm with New Erections clocking in at twenty-three minutes proving a potent and primal alarm that sludges along peach hairs before this breaking levy.
Here is New Erections, eleven tracks deep and somehow totally anthemic, throbbing in the void of those past limps crumbled by planes and bleak brains, blanketed by soft skulls with electric socket glory holes for eyes that worship the steel wool pulled over them.
New Erections, a celebratory prost! to the old photos of you, mid-twenties, with friends pissing on GG's shallow grave now under-exposed by the current you, over-miserable hollow white-collar power-slave.
New Erections, later Saddam, hey Gomorrah...No more goose-stepping around the issue, huh? No more domes stuffed with down tissue, right?
New Erections, find you pill synthetic sweat sympathetic, poker-face vague with Viagra, on your knees praying of drawing that magic card and hard up for hard-ons.
New Erections, mighty kind of your snitching hairy palms to loosen the grips on strangling blood-filled phallic police tips.
New Erections, with the world's voluptuous vomit crashing in all around, towers a true testament in the inevitable wake of tidal sewage.
C'mon stiffs, we must demolish and level together... in the dead of everything...in the cold-sweat of the night, heat of the freon freedom fight, New Erections is exactly what we wanted.

LIGERS N DREAMS PRESENTS

|

LIGERS N DREAMS

emailflyer.jpgA shameless yuletide festival of decadence hosted by Ligers N' Dreams.

We're taking it back to the late seventies, eighties and early nineties when rock was rock, jeans were truly tight and hair was truly big. Think early Guns N' Roses, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Motley Crue, Bowie, Aerosmith, Patti Smith, The Rolling Stones.

So come join us... Get your rocks off with the ligers in the smoky half light. Drink and dance in the dark, then drink some more. Make up your face and glam up your hair. Peel on your strides and pad up your tops. Get your cowboy boots out of the closet and get down to rock with us on December 6th.

This is Studio 54 in leopard skin and mascara. This is Axl Rose's wedding. This is Debby Harry taking her knickers off back stage at CBs. This is Ligers N' Dreams.

Ligers N' Dreams... For those about to rock we salute you!

"For those about to rock... here's where you can indulge your Axl Rose and leather-trousered fantasies and hear the Bon Jovi, AC/DC and Whitesnake riffs that so few other London clubs play."
TimeOut

"Skin-tight leather debauchery, bleached-toxic hair spray fumes and sex, drugs and rock 'n roll glitter under electric light. This is hard, glam rock at its dirty best."
The Times On-Line

"The Ligers n' Dreams DJs get on the case with a playlist to rival Bill and Ted's. This is possibly the only place in London where you can practice your Axl Rose tantrums and air your leather strides."
Flavorpill.com

"Ligers N Dreams rocks like nothin' else bitch!"

Damo-Suzuki-poster.jpgDamo Suzuki

Suzuki Kenji, born January 16, 1950, in Japan, popularly nicknamed Damo Suzuki, is a singer probably best known for his membership in German krautrock group CAN.

Suzuki spent the late 1960s wandering around Europe, often busking, during which time he would only have been a teenager.

When Malcolm Mooney left Can after recording their first album Monster Movie, Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit encountered Suzuki singing on a street in Munich, Germany whilst the two were sitting outside at a street café. They invited him to join the group, and he did, performing with them that evening.

Suzuki was with Can from 1970 to 1973, recording a number of well-regarded albums such as Tago Mago and Ege Bamyasi. His freeform, often improvised lyrics, sung in no one particular language gelled with Can's rolling, psychedelic sound.

Suzuki converted to the Jehovah's Witness faith when he married his German girlfriend, who was also a Jehovah's Witness, after the release of the album Future Days, and retired from music in 1974.

He returned to music in 1983, and currently leads what is known as Damo Suzuki's Network- as he tours, he performs live improvisational music with various local musicians (so-called "Sound Carriers") from around the world, thus building up a 'network' of musicians that he has and can collaborate with.

Kawabata Makoto
Guitarist, performer on numerous traditional instruments, composer, improviser, mixing engineer, producer, leader of the Acid Mothers Temple, speed guru.

"Music, for me, is neither something that I create, nor a form of self-expression. All kinds of sounds exist everywhere around us, and my performances solely consist of picking up these sounds, like a radio tuner, and playing them so that people can hear them. However, maybe because my reception is somewhat off, I am unable to perfectly reproduce these sounds. That is why I spend my days rehearsing.
Where do these sounds come from? Who is sending them out? That is not something for me to know, and neither is there any way that I could find out. I simply believe that they come from the 'cosmos'. (Maybe other people would call God the source). Since I was a small child I have been prone to hearing ringing sounds in my ears and other sound phantasms. At the time, I believed that these were messages aimed directly at me from a UFO, and so I would gaze up at the sky. But once I started playing music myself, I came to feel that these noises were a kind of pure sound. And I promised myself that one day I would be able to play those sounds myself. It is only recently that I have begun to feel that I have been able to come close to reproducing these sounds in my solo guitar work, and in my INUI project.
However, in June of 1999, I finally discovered my own 'cosmos' and I experienced an instant of total union with it!! That 'cosmos' is still tiny in size - although any cosmos can, by its very nature, be infinitely huge or infinitely small. The energy and vibrations contained within that it far exceeded my imagination in scope and beauty. I can only describe the miraculous instant when my 'cosmos' accepted my consciousness as MAGIC."
(Kawabata Makoto. July 8th 2000)

THE KITS

After starting out in the city of Melbourne, Australia, The Kits have now relocated to London
where their sound has come into its own. Drawing comparisons with The Saints, Gang of Four and The Sonics, The Kits' tales of crime, addiction and short-lived romances have resulted in a rapturous following and earned them recent supports with The Dirtbombs,Wolfmother, The Saints and The Nightmarchers, as well as rave reviews in magazines like Kerrang and Artrocker.

Harking back to the days when rock'n'roll was still considered a threat to the world's youth,
The Kits are set to conquer the world with the release of their long-awaited debut album. A
garage rock'n'roll band at heart, they've taken the stomp and grit of the '50s and '60s and
given it the injection of eternal youth through relentless guitar hooks and snarling vocals.

MONKEY ISLAND

You wanna talk garage rock? Imagine Bleach era Nirvana playing the blues with droplets of the bleakest,
blackest comedy running down their spines, equal parts frantic garage, malevolant hardcore and fractured Coltrane fallout..

One of the most unique outfits to emerge from the London Rhythm 'n' Blues and burlesque scenes. Guaranteed to both fuel your feet and feed your mind, their groove is undeniable.

Lili La Scala
a street opera singing, burlesque dancing, balloon popping, trapeze swinging, glass walking diminuitive diva with a taste for high heels and the high life makes a special appearance.

The Cotswolds - formerly The Fucks
Two english eccentrics; Jemma Freeman and George Lionel Barker came to be a band as a result of a dare by a friend. Built on this foundation there is a mentality of inspiration, excitement and bravado to be found in their performance and music. Their indefatigable desire to entertain is engaging, they are outrageous, charming, but lovely!

Star London Hula Hoopers will be shaking their thing on the dancefloor throughout the night, and we've got plenty of hoops to go around so wind your belly, wiggle your body. For all those slightly concerned about their hoola hooping ability, prepare to be AMAZED! the big blue hoops we have are so easy you barely need to move, yet you will look like a pro. Or you can simply enjoy the view of beautiful guys and gals shaking them hips!

ROCK A HULA DJs!!!!!!!!!!!

More acts TBA!

And finally, don't miss the hoop-off contest. The winner gets a trophy! Think 'hawaiian run dmc style dance-off'

Entry: £3 all night
Hoola hooping & swing dance lesson included!

Doors: 8pm - 2am

Manda Rin
You are a teenager and start a band with your mates from school. You are fun and spirited and people start to take notice of you. Your band become the only unsigned band ever to appear on Top Of The Pops, get on the cover of the NME and sign to the Beastie Boys' Grand Royal label in the U.S of 'merica. You sell shed loads in Japan and soundtrack the super cool Powerpuff Girls cartoon series. Everything seems possible but then you suffer one of the most unwarranted press backlashes evs. You brush yourself off and still manage to remain optimistic and in love with music. You are officially awesumz. You are Manda Rin. Hooray!!
Bis were way ahead of their time but the time is now for Manda's solo project, an album of fun disco-punk with a strong guitar pop edge. She cites new inspiration from the likes of CSS, To My Boy and Late of the Pier but lets not forget she has been making that music herself for over a decade now thankyouplease.
Manda Rin we salute you! Come and give her some fucking love!

Luke Rowell has been fascinated with the possibilities of combining synthesized sound with pop melody since his family got a Commodore 64 when he was like, 6 years old. If it had been antiques he was into and he lived in the UK he would have been on Wogan for sure. His adult musical endeavor is an attempt at creating electronic music that is evocative and sudden while embodying a backdrop of new wave / synthpop pastiche, tongue-in-cheek modernism and themes of camp science. It sounds Yum, Eat it up!

A Grave With No Name
Londons A Grave With No Name was born in Church. Not the house of God, but the bedroom studio of main mans Alax Shields. He started the solo project with a variety of shitty drum machines and dusty guitars and later called on bassist Tom King and guitarist Anupa Madawela to add some welly to the crunchy pop he had already made. The result nods to the likes of Daniel Johnston and Animal Collective and is dreamy goodness. Coolez!

Pash(ly)
'Pash(ly) is Susan Ploetz pretending to be a band all by herself. From uncomfortably intriguing, to beautiful, funny, sexy and danceable: to Pash(ly) it all fits in and makes sense, even if it shouldn't. Susan has toured in the US, Canada, and Asia with her work and has self-released 2 CDs: Meet Me behind the Couch and Soft is Not Weak.' She has been co-curating a performance night called Grab Bag with Khaela Maricich of The Blow since July 2006 and comes to Mofo to perform for you. Feel Special!

RMXXOLOGY was born a year ago when Delicious Vinyl honcho Rick Ross met Peaches after a show. After agreeing that she would do a version of Tone Loc's "Wild Thing" they began brainstorming a dream team of artists to let loose on the Delicious Vinyl catalog.
This led to the creation of The Delicious Vinyl All-Stars, a collective including prime-time players like Eminem and Diplo, as well as upstart French freakers Mr. Flash, Breakbot, and Don Rimini, and L.A. new jacks Cory Nitta (Pink Enemy/Philippians) and Bobby Evans (Brother Reade). Soon each of the Delicious Vinyl All-Stars was having their way with a Delicious Vinyl classic of their choosing...including classic tracks by Tone Loc, Young MC, The Pharcyde, Masta Ace, The Brand New Heavies, and Fatlip.

RIM RECORDS PRESENTS

|

Sexton Ming's RIM label showcases its eclectic mix.

Rude Mechanicals

A splat of Beefheart, a dash of the Tiger Lillies, and a formidable front woman singing of alien mice and squealing flatmates who live under beds. Petrifying, quizzical, musically refreshing: convulse at the sheer outrageousness of it all.

The Tropics of Cancer

Hi-class lo-fi, from jazz standards turned upside down to punk to be bop, all in a rich sauce of Tin Pan Ally, topped with She Rocola's playful and tumultuous purrs. The Tropics of Cancer bloody well play what they like. With nice hats.
Sexton Ming: the Medway legend himself reads his unforgiving spoken word - you laugh or cry but either way you'll spill your drink. Poetry for people don't like poetry.

The Deptford Beach Babes

Twisted surf-rockabilly, grass skirts and twangy guitars with Jane Ruby (from Naked Ruby) on vocals, and a rotating guest line-up including members of The Urban Voodoo Machine.

uzi.jpgUZI & ARI

Uzi & Ari have awakened! In contrast to their previous effort, "Headworms" exposes a very lucid and exuberant band with a newfound urgency. I imagine Shepard standing on a chair in the center of a room, encumbered by a large coterie of instruments, dancing wildly, dipping his brush into the palette of sounds that surround him to fashion just the right rhythms and crescendos to color his canvas. RIYL: Radiohead, Múm, Sigur Ros, The National.

LONELY GHOSTS

Lonely Ghosts is the brainchild of Tom Denney (guitarist and co-vocal extraordinaire in indie noise kids Help She Can't Swim). Exploring more avant-pop, electro and acoustic influences than Help She Can't Swim, Lonely Ghosts is an eclectic amalgamation of sounds all held together by his love for a pure 'pop' tune.

THE WAVE.jpgTHE WAVE PICTURES

The Wave Pictures are Dave Tattersall, Franic Rozycki and Jonny ''Huddersfield'' Helm. In 1998 Franic and Dave lived in a village called Wymeswold where they started playing music together, with Hugh J. Noble on drums. The band was called Blind Summit. When Hugh decided he didn't want to play drums he went to Exeter to study Philosophy instead. The band changed it's name to The Wave Pictures. Hugh was replaced by several drummers, until Jonny "Huddersfield" Helm became the permanent replacement. For a few years Dave, Franic and Jonny lived apart, meeting up sporadically to play music. They kept on writing songs and recording, and they played shows across the UK and in France and New York. During this time highlights included playing at the Mofo Festival in Paris at the invitation of friends Herman Dune, and playing shows with The Jeffrey Lewis Band. Dave also sang The Wave Pictures song "Dust Off Your Heart" with Herman Dune on a radio session for the late great John Peel. The Wave Pictures also served as backing band and co-songwriters for John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats, the results featuring on a seven-inch single released by 4AD records. Last summer, the band finally moved together and currently share a flat in Bethnal Green, London. They are more active than ever. They have toured Spain and Sweden with the mighty Darren Hayman, formerly of Hefner, and played several times in Berlin and France.

TRANSGLOBAL.jpgTRANSGLOBAL UNDERGROUNG

WINNERS OF BBC CLUB GLOBAL AWARD FOR 2008! CURRENT ALBUM IS 'MOONSHOUT'

with guest appearances from NATACHA ATLAS, KRUPA, BLASTED MECHANISM, AIWA, YANKA RUPKINA, NALINI PATTNI, DOREEN THOBEKILE and many more...

Transglobal Underground return with their 7th album, 'Moonshout', the follow-up to 2004's 'Impossible Broadcasting'. Released on their own label Mule Satellite Recordings, the 14-track album features founding members Tim Whelan (keyboards/ guitar) and Hamid Mantu (drums/ programming), plus the current core members of the collective, Godfrey 'Tuup' Duncan (lead vocals/ congas), Sheema Mukherjee (sitar/ bass), Gurjit Sihra (dhol/ kaos pad) Ravinder Neiyyar (dhol/ tables) and Krupa (vocals) 'Moonshout' presents Transglobal Underground's expansive musical kingdom in four distinct moods. The album commences full-on with some of the most dancefloor-friendly songs they have ever recorded. The sounds and influences are from all over the world but the source is clearly the collective's birthplace in London. Opening track 'Dancehall Operator' is a mix of Brazilian drum and bass and Indian rhythms. Title track 'Moonshout' includes the Romany roots of rap with vocals by MC Rise FM (Hungary) and Shugmonkey (UK). Vocalist Krupa features on the Bollywood pop style of 'Emotional Yoyo'.Krupa's music is an extraordinary blend of Indian tribal beats, urban funk and pop. Having performed and collaborated with TGU for several years (she was featured on their album Impossible Broadcasting) Krupa and TGU break new ground with EMOTIONAL YOYO which is a remix of OH NO, a song composed, produced and originally performed by Krupa. She continues to write and record music in her own distinct, yet varied style. Listen to more of Krupa's tracks and read more about the artist herself on her myspace 'Awal' features Iraqi rapper Naufalle from French/Arabic band Aiwa as well as Transglobal Underground's original vocalist Natacha Atlas who has of course found great success as a solo artist with material still for the most part produced by the collective (this is Natacha's first appearance on a Transglobal Underground album since her legendary period fronting the group). Transglobal Underground's collaboration with Portugal's notorious Blasted Mechanism on 'Total Rebellion' moves the album into a second section of a harder edged territory, with the collective also finally achieving their ambition of writing an angry country song in 'Swampland' (featuring Black Sifichi from France/ USA on vocals) and with 'Cape Thunder' (featuring South African vocalist Doreen Thobekile and Shimmer Baby from the UK) creating a nightmarish vision of chaos. There is real beauty to be found on the album, too, most notably on the track 'Mera Jhumka' featuring Indian ghazal singing star Nalini Pattni which introduces a series of dub-soaked soundscapes with a strong sub-continental drift, leading up to the epic 'Spice Garden' featuring the amazing voice of legendary Bulgarian traditional vocalist Yanka Rupkina. The album's final three tracks (including 'Mag ak Ndaw which features Prague-based Senegalese vocalist Burama Badji) have little to do with anything Transglobal Underground have ever done...in fact they have little to do with anything anyone has ever done - you could say that this is the closest to Elvis that Transglobal Underground have ever come!

oxford.jpgOXFORD COLLAPSE

Like many of the best things, Oxford Collapse started as a joke of sorts. And, thankfully that sense of spontaneous fun remained when they decided they'd become an actual band after playing shows around their hometown of Brooklyn, NY in 2002. Yes, Brooklyn. But, let's not let preconceptions about Oxford Collapse's location on a map confuse the issue. This band might be stuck in an era of mp3s and a more general cultural digitization, but they possess a vitality born of blaring tape decks, deafening basement shows and a wide-eyed, bottomless enthusiasm that makes "jaded" sound as dirty and shameful as it should. Already they've released two full-lengths (Some Wilderness in 2004 and A Good Ground in 2005), and a handful of singles and EPs. Taking cues from post-punk pioneers and genre-transcending bands like The Embarassment, Mission of Burma or fIREHOSE, Oxford Collapse construct melodic art-pop packed full of chiming guitars and shout-along vocals ("Let's Vanish," "Loser City") Remember the Night Parties is both restless/nervous and heartfelt, with time signatures that are as urgent as they are unpredictable. At once angular and redefined, detached and immediate, the new album finds Oxford Collapse testing the waters of their own inspiration.
Since the joke began, Oxford Collapse has toured extensively with the Constantines, the Joggers, and Part Chimp. Recorded in the Summer of 2006 at Headgear Studios in Brooklyn with John Agnello (Sonic Youth, The Hold Steady), Remember the Night Parties is their Sub Pop Debut.
